about

When Improvising, we shouldn't accept that very much of anything that transpires “belongs to us”. It’s always a bit mysterious as to why we did one thing and not another, or why one thing happened and not another, but it seems clear that we cannot be “held responsible” for the resulting music. Truth is, improvisation can bring a person face to face not with their vast know-how and razor sharp intuition, but instead with how little they know, and how little they have to offer. And yet! Somehow, something happens all the same. Sure, it slips from your grasp just as fast as you think you may have done it, and sure, it’s mostly forgotten at the very moment of genesis, but! For an occasional brief instant, you get to bask in the slim chance that it may have been temporarily your contribution, temporarily your idea, temporarily your fault. Only, ever, temporarily yours.
